Project Lead for AAAS Review

The Outdoor Council of Australia is calling for applications for the Project Lead on this exciting project for the Outdoor Industry. As the AAAS is now 5 years old, the currency on this important tool will ensure it continues to be the guide for good practice in all sectors of the industry where led activities occur with dependant participants.


The AAAS (Australian Adventure Activity Standard) Review project will evaluate and update the existing standard framework to ensures it meets current safety, environmental, and industry good practices. This project also presents an opportunity to enhance community engagement, build strategic partnerships, and identify funding opportunities to support the Outdoor Council of Australia’s sustainability and leverage.


The Outdoor Council of Australia (OCA)

The Outdoor Council of Australia (OCA) is the national peak body that advocates for and represents organisations that facilitate outdoor adventure activities for the purposes of:

  • Recreation

  • Education

  • Tourism

  • Personal development

  • Corporate development


The Position

The Project Lead will be the primary driver of this project with responsibility to lead and manage the project objectives and maintain communication with the key stakeholders. It is also expected that the successful applicant will provide vision and direction in order for OCA to prosper beyond the period of this review.


Project Objectives:

Review and Update:

  • Conduct a comprehensive review of the existing AAAS and GPG’s.

  • Update standards to reflect current safety, environmental, and industry good practices.

  • Ensure the standards are inclusive, accessible, and applicable to a wide range of adventure activities.

Community Engagement:

  • Develop and implement a community engagement strategy to involve stakeholders in the review process.

  • Facilitate workshops, focus groups, and consultations to gather input and feedback.

  • Foster a sense of ownership and collaboration among the adventure activities community.

Partnership Development:

  • Identify and engage potential partners, including industry bodies, government agencies, educational institutions, and non-profit organisations.

  • Establish strategic partnerships to support the project and enhance its impact.

  • Leverage partnerships to promote the updated standards and ensure widespread adoption.

Funding Opportunities:

  • Identify and pursue funding opportunities from government grants, private sector sponsorships, and philanthropic organisations.

  • Develop compelling proposals and presentations to secure future financial support for the project.

  • Manage project budgets and ensure efficient use of resources.

Organisational Sustainability and Leverage:

  • Utilise the project to strengthen the organisation’s reputation and influence in the adventure activities sector.

  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance the organisation’s long-term sustainability and leverage.

  • Promote the updated AAAS and GPG’s to position the organisation as a leader in setting industry good practise guidelines.


Key Responsibilities:

Project Management:

  • Develop and execute a detailed project plan, including timelines, milestones, and deliverables.

  • Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure project objectives are met.

  • Monitor project progress, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies.

  • Provide strategic advice to the OCA Board on how to best advance the industry.


Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including community members, industry representatives, various State and Territory government departments (Education, Sport, etc) and partners.

  • Facilitate communication and collaboration among stakeholders throughout the project.

  • Ensure transparency and inclusivity in the review process.


Research and Analysis:

  • Conduct thorough research on current standards, best practices, and emerging trends in adventure activities.

  • Analyse feedback and input from stakeholders to inform the update process.

  • Prepare reports and documentation to support decision-making and communication.


Funding and Resource Management:

  • Identify funding sources and develop proposals to secure financial support.

  • Manage project budgets and ensure efficient use of resources.

  • Report on funding status and project financials to stakeholders and funders.


Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in project management, particularly in standards development or similar initiatives.

  • Strong community engagement and stakeholder management skills (IAP2 Accreditation favourable).

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation abilities.

  • Ability to identify and secure funding opportunities.

  • Knowledge of the adventure activities sector and related safety and environmental standards.

  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.


Reporting and Evaluation:

The role will report to the Chair of the OCA.

In addition it is expected that they provide:-

  • Regular progress reports to the steering committee and OCA Board.

  • Periodic evaluation of project milestones and objectives.

  • Final project report outlining outcomes, lessons learned, and recommendations for future initiatives.

  • Provide financial acquittals as required


Location

It is expected that the successful applicant will be able to provide their own workspace. The successful applicant will reside in Australia and have permission to work in Australia and be available to travel both intrastate and interstate on a regular basis.

Foreign based applications will not be considered.


Workload

The position is offered as a fixed term award free contract. It is expected that the role will be between 0.6 – 1.0 FTE depending on skills of the applicant with a conclusion date for the project of 30th June, 2026.

OCA is open to both organisations or individuals applying for this role.

The work will be done remotely and require travel.
